1.2 - Activity Seven - Pirated Entertainment

An advantage of paying a supplier for a legal music download is that you are more certain that what you are getting is the right song and of high quality. One main advantage is that you do not get a virus when downloading this music. It also does not take as long to download a song compared to if you used an illegal programe.
The disadvantage of buying an pirate DVD off a market stall is that the quality of sound and picture is very bad. You are not able to return the DVD and you are not legally covered in any way.
The disadvantage of getting a pirate download of the latest Hollywood blockbuster before it is released in the UK is like those of buying a pirate DVD off a market stall... the picture and sound quality of the film may be bad and not of high quality compared to a DVD itself. With a DVD you also get bonus features which you may not get if you download the film. The website/programme you are using to download the films from may not be well trusted and you are more likely to catch a virus on your computer.
The disadvantage of using an illicit music download site is that you may not be able to trust that you are getting the high quality of sound, the correct song and through downloading it you may also recieve a virus on your computer. Through these sites you may also be tracked however this may not be likely as thousands of people use illegal download sites.
The use of illegal downloading sites may mean discourage the funding of new talent because as it is easier to now acsess illegal downloading sites people may use this more than an illegal site or buying the physical product, especially if the artist is fairly new. This may because it is free and if the artist not well known people will not know if the music is good or not so instead of buying the single or album they download if free. This means the artist does not recieve as much money for their work and in return may not get as much publicity and the funders will not gain as much money from the artist as much as they would with a well known artist.

1.2 - Activity Six - Access To Original Entertainment

"It has never been easier to publish original entertainment
It has never been harder to see and hear original entertainment."

One of the main reasons it has never been easier to publish original entertainment is because there are so many websites you are able to upload it to. A main source where you are able to find original entertainment is Youtube. Social networking websites such as Facebook, Bebo & MySpace are also another source as you are able to upload your own videos to your profile for others to view. There are many other websites where you are not only able to upload videos but you are able to upload images too, for example Today's BIG fail, or Failblog.

A reason why it has never been harder to see and hear original entertainment is because there is so much around and so much available to us. On Youtube for example there are many of the same types of entertainment... E.g. There are hundereds of videos on Youtube about "Funny Cats" so it is harder to find the source of original entertainment and as it is largely available it may argue that they are not 'original'. It may be hard to distinguish 'original entertainment' to entertainment copied or secondary entertainment.

1.2 - Activity Five - Evaluate Your Communications

Email - I use email to send messages to friends & family. Within school I use email to send work to myself at home and vica versa. This is a quick way of communicating and you are able to send long messages to people.
Mobile Phone - I use my mobile phone to send SMS messages and call my friends & family. This is a quick and easy way of communicating - however you are only able to send/recieve SMS or phonecalls if you have signal on your phone. It is portable so whereas with a computer you have to be at a computer or a laptop with a phone you are able to take it anywhere and send/recieve SMS/text.

1.2 - Activity Four - When do you use mobile phones?

I use my mobile phone in order to quickly communicate with people - either via SMS or verbally over the phone. Another purpose I use my mobile for is to take photos. A mobile phone is an easier way to take photos as I do not always carry my camera around. I use my mobile in school and also out side of school. I use it for social use e.g. texting or calling friends and family and I also use it to set reminders of what work is to be done and to set alarms. Major benefits of using a mobile phone is that they are small so they are easy to carry around with you but they still able to do a lot of things. A mobile phone allows me to easily communicate with people other then verbally talking. If you need to contact someone but you are out you are able to send a quick SMS or a phone call. Dependent on what phone you are also able to accsess e-mail. A disadvantage of a mobile phone is that you may want to send an SMS or have a phone call but if there is limited or no signal you would not be able to connect the call or send a SMS. Another disadvantage is that phone may run out of battery. My mobile does fulfil its intended purpose as I am able to communicate easily with people using SMS or phoning people.

1.2 - Activity Four - When you use E-mail?

I tend to use E-mail for sending attatchments such as work to myself to and from home and school. I also use E-mail for other purposes like filling in application forms or emailing certain people - like a company. I normally use E-mail at home and at school but I do not use E-mail to communicate with friends, for this I tend to use instant messenger. One of the major benefits of using email is that you are able to send attachments such as: word files, images, videos and sounds. However there are limitations on the amount and size of files you are able to send. Another major benefit is that you are able to send group emails to large groups of people. This means that they all get the same information but you do not have to send repeated e-mails. A disadvantage of using e-mail is that you are limited to the amounth of characters you can have in an e-mail however this amount is still a fair amount. E-mail makes me more productive when I need to communicate information with someone quickly and at ease. Also when I need to send school work to or from school. However it can also cause a distraction if i am e-mailing for personal use e.g. communicating with friends. E-mail fulfils its purpose by allowing people or groups of people to easily contact eacother and a method in which people are able to send files to one another.

1.2 - Activity One - Tool Man

ICT may be able to help and change Johns working style as it will add ease to tasks he performs everyday. Such things as PDA, GPS, Laptop, Software, Mobile Phone & The internet can make this possible. With GPS John would be able to work out a route to his clients without the need of using a large road atlas - it calculates the quickest routes to the destination, gives an estimate of the time and distance, Although GPS does not take traffic into account so the actual time could differ depending on traffic. This could be used on a PDA, this would also help with his working style as you will be able to store information such as dates, clients names and adresses - this would save the need to carry a diary and adress book and it would also have the GPS system. As John carries coins for phone - with a mobile he would not need to carry coins as he can store numbers in his phone for his clients and use this as a way of communicating, if he was going to be late to meet his client he would be able to phone and inform them of when he estimates he should arrive. However with this depending on the area the signal may be limited so he cannot contact his clients easily. A Laptop could also help improve as instead of having large catolouge and calculator he could use software on a laptop which provides a way of storing and showing the informtion in the catolouge and there will also be a calculator on the laptop. However - a laptop is rather large itself so would take up a lot of room, another disadvantage is that it is battery powered so if he is in an area where he would not be able to accsess a power source the laptop may run out of battery and John is not able to perform certain tasks. To overcome one way is to bring the catolouges and order forms - however this increases the amount he has to take. With employing a lot of ICT there can be many faults - it may not work or may become slow over time which means he cannot perform tasks at ease.
